Hoplite Hut

John Repp

John Repp is a writer, collagist, and folk photographer living in Erie, Pennsylvania.

If I didn’t have to pace out the disinterred walls of the hut the hoplites built to over-winter here, I could sand the iron railings & rake acorns, but that would mean another empire’s collapse. Mayflies cloud translucently above the current. Tautologies are permanent thunderheads. Homo Ludens stands stone-faced before a window painted shut in 1951. Or was it another holiday? The telephone lines buzz & sway in the gale. Yellow engines barrel through the middle of town.
