Hieronymus Bach
& His Bacchantes
When we got
our first piano
installed in
the living room
my sisters raved
and clapped
and danced.
BUT MA
I wailed
amid the din
WHICH END
DO YOU
BLOW ON?
Prehistory
Revisited
Back in high school
my pal Charlie
sitting in the front
seat of his Mustang
at the drive in
burger joint
got his kicks
lighting farts
like he was
the first caveman
inventing how
to inspire
laughter by
expiring
fire
Busker
We were passing
the Venus de Milo.
A Policeman stood
in front of it:
Nothing to see here.
Please move along.
Nothing to see here.
Just move along.
We tossed
a few coins
into the hat
at his feet.
He was right
about the arms
anyway.
At least we
could see that.

Slip open bag
of fresh popcorn
& peer inside:
cavern full of
human skulls:
archaic echo
crunch crunch
of massacre

Cold Refusal
So this last
sheet in
the box
of Kleenex
doesn’t
want to
come out.
Feels your
fingertips
scrabbling
for contact.
Doesn’t
want to be
touched
plucked up
by the nape
like Leda.
Not this
last sheet
Mr. Poet
you’re no
swan and
I’m not
coming.
Morning
Warning
Perhaps
the most
dangerous
thing
a geezer
can do
is put
on a pair
of trousers
standing up:
it is like
stepping
into
a swamp
of
mouths
