I spent my life thinking
about those who hurt me
and not about those I hurt
along the way.
Isn’t this the hypocrisy
that fills our hearts and minds
as we blame the daggers
that etched deep scars?
If only I could have tasted
the discontent on your lips,
waiting for me to become the
person I promised to be.
If only I could tell you then
what I’m brave enough to say now.
How I opened the door for you to
love me then slammed it shut.
Is this the reason you left
or were there other transgressions
I didn’t fully recognize,
thinking you should be grateful?
I’ll spend my whole life hoping
you can remember some
happy times, the small slivers
of good things that I did.
